Gone to the Mountain drives home a winner in $53,280 Red Cell New Mexico Challenge

Gone to the Mountain drove home a convincing 1 and 3/4-length winner in the $53,280 Red Cell New Mexico Challenge at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Sunday.

The reigning world champion 870 yard horse had to work early to gain his sixth straight win, but in the final stages there was no doubt to his dominance. Gone to the Mountain was challenged by La Especial Corona rounding the far turn of the 870 yard stakes. Jockey Freddie Martinez never seemed worried and continued to merely hand ride the 1-9 favorite into the home stretch. The multiple stakes winning son of Panther Mountain shifted gears and put away the early threat.

Gone to the Mountain raced smoothly through the stretch and hit finish line safely clear of both Sheet Burns and High On Cat. The wire to wire winner caught the distance in a fast 43.94 seconds, good for a 102 speed index. The world record holder at 870 yards seemed to have plenty of speed in reserve. He collected $27,706 from his 12th career win from 24 starts. The distance dynamo is trained by Wes Giles and owned by Clyde Woerner of Georgetown, Texas. His impressive bankroll is approaching $440,000. The five-year-old stallion remains unbeaten over Sunland Park soil in 4 attempts.

It was an interesting day to say the least. There were fluke things that accured resulting in horses that were expected to run good didn't run as good as expected and vice versa. Congratulations to those who had horses that ran good but unfortunately didn't qualify. To those who had horses that had some bad luck, we will look forward to some better luck next time.
