Owner, Breeder Lincoln Sherwood Dies

OWNER, BREEDER LINCOLN SHERWOOD DIES

September 29, 2010 - Owner and breeder Lincoln Sherwood, 63, died September 26 at home on his ranch in Darrouzett, Texas, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was born January 9, 1947, in St. Johns, Arizona, to Gleason Richey Sherwood and Alma Heap. Lincoln, his brother Kim, and his sister Kathy were raised in St. Johns by their grandparents L.P. and Clara Sherwood and Byron and Anona Heap, after their parents died in an auto accident when the children were young.

Sherwood married Linda Udall and together they raised six children and were successful in cattle ranching, horse racing and a construction business.

Among the other horses he owned, Sherwood in partnerships owned Grade 1 winner Wild Six and Grade 1-placed Feature Ten. Wild Six won the Grade 1 2007 West Texas and Rainbow futurities and earned $601,632.

Sherwood was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served a two-year mission in Ireland, as well as serving in various positions for the Church throughout his lifetime.

Sherwood is survived by his wife Linda; sons Mark (Gena) of Kirtland, New Mexico; Vern (Luz) of Gilbert, Arizona; Matt (Sheila) of Nephi, Utah; Chase (Molly) of Taylor, Arizona; daughters Melissa (Mike) Hancock of Snowflake, Arizona; Brooke (Cy) White of Canadian, Texas; brother Kim (Debbie) of St. Johns and sister Kathy Phalen of St. Johns, 24 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held in St. Johns at 11 a.m. Friday, October 1, in the Downtown Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with visitation from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Internment will take place at the St. Johns Westside Cemetery.
